1507908 Starting emergency generator sets KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AG 16 Dec 1975 [17 Jan 1975] 51475/75 Heading F1K An emergency generator is driven by an exhaust driven turbocharged reciprocating I.C. engine which is connectible to a flywheel through a first clutch for bringing the engine up to operating speed on failure of a power supply. The flywheel is driven through a second clutch by an electric motor powered by the power supply. As the turbocharger accelerates slower than the I.C. engine, the engine is starved of air and its power builds up slowly. In order to avoid slow power build-up an additive is injected during starting into the air induction manifold of the engine to increase the entropy of the exhaust gases and the acceleration of the turbocharger. To avoid overheating the additive has a higher latent heat of evaporation than the fuel employed and may be water, methanol, ethanol or a mixture of these.
