Tyramine prepn. by decarboxylation of tyrosine - and purificn. via the oxalate salt

Tyramine (I) and its salts are prepd. by (a) decarboxylating 1-tyrosine at high temp. in diphenyl ether as heat-transfer medium; (b) treating the crude product with oxalic acid; (c) suspending the resulting (I) oxalate in a lower alcohol and introducing HCl gas to form the hydrochloride or adding another acid to form another salt; and opt. (d) converting the resulting salt into (I). The prod. has hypertensive, peripheral vasoconstricting and uterus-contracting activity. The process gives good yields (e.g. 60%) of (I) pure enough for pharmaceutical purposes, and can be operated on a technical scale.
