1380059 Plasticizing ionomers EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 30 Dec 1971 [4 Jan 1971] 60705/71 Heading C3P Compositions comprise a sulphonated elastomer ionomer and a preferential plasticizer which is dispersible but not completely soluble in the ionomer, is liquid during processing of the ionomer and has at least one functional constituent selected from C-O, N-H, S-H, C-Cl, C-Br, C-F, C-I, S=O and N-O which exhibits a bond moment whose absolute value is at least 0À6 Debye, provided that where the plasticizer is a volatile plasticizer it is liquid at ambient temperatures, has a boiling point not greater than 190‹ C. and is incorporated in amount of 0À25 to 15% by weight of the ionomer, and where the plasticizer is a non-volatile plasticizer it has a melting point at least 25‹ C. above the contemplated use temperature of the ionomer and not more than 50‹ C. below a preselected processing temperature and is incorporated in amount of 0À25 to 6% by weight of the ionomer. The plasticizers may be non- volatile, remaining in the final product, or volatile, being evolved on processing the ionomer. The ionomer may be formed by neutralizing with metal ions a random or graft copolymer of an unsaturated sulphonic acid, or a sulphonated polystyrene, polydiene rubbers, styrene-butadiene rubber, butyl rubber or ethylene/ propylene/diene terpolymer rubber. Specified plasticizers include metal salts of carboxylic acids, fatty acids, benzyl alcohol, resorcinol, diglycol stearate, dicarboxylic acid esters, polyethylene oxides, nonylphenol, nonyl phenyl ether, phosphate esters, amines, hydrated and alcoholated metal salts, ethers, alcohols and thiols, and halohydrocarbons. Examples describe plasticizing sodium sulphonated butyl rubber with diorthotolyl guanidine salt of dicatechol borate, triethanolamine, polyethylene oxide and tetraethylene oxide; (1) calcium stearate, zinc stearate and zinc laurate; (2) calcium sulphate dihydrate; and (6) tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, stearic acid, zinc stearate, dioctyl phthalate and tributyl phosphate; potassium sulphonated EPDM (ethylidene norbornene) rubber with (3) stearoyl amino phenol and calcium stearate; (4) diphenyl guanidine, with and without carbon black and extender oil; and (6) n-butanol, diphenyl guanidine, N-octadecyl p-aminophenol and ethylene diamine salt of hydroxystearic acid; calcium sulphonated EPDM rubber with (3) zinc stearate and nbutanol; and calcium sulphonated cis-1,4-polybutadiene with (5) n-butanol. |
