A plant for the aerobic decay and decontamination of composting materials and/or clarified sludge comprises a tank with airtight walls and a grating at an inter. level to support the materials above the floor; the air chamber thus formed above the floor and below the grating has an air extract line leading out of it to an extract blower; a gas analyser measures the oxygen content, or the CO2 content of the air below the grating. When the reading falls below a predetermined, adjustable value, a control unit switches on the blower and opens a valve to draw in fresh air. Pref. the air replacement is carried out with a rapid, powerful extn. giving a complete change of air in a very short time, so that all levels of the bed start agin with a fresh supply. Alternate suction and blowing may be used. Used for treating town waste, other types of waste and sludge. The intermittent air extn. prevents an aerobic activity starting, but does not cool the material excessively by too frequent air changes. All levels of material decay at the same rate. |
