CARPET TILE CUTTER

1454383 Cutting apparatus ARMSTRONG CORK CO 28 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972] 55204/73 Heading B4B [Also in Division B8R] An apparatus for forming carpet tiles comprises a feed structure 6 for positioning a sheet 2 of carpet upon a needle board conveyer means 8, conveyer means 16 for passing the needle board and sheet past a number of cutting discs 14 to slit the sheet into a number of strips and further conveyer means 20 for moving the board and sheet past a second set of cutting discs 22 to thereby divide the sheet into squares. The needle board is pulled past the cutting discs 14 by means of a lug on a chain 19 engaging the rear edge of the board until the latter reaches a ball-type transfer conveyer 18; the board is then moved manually until a lug on a second chain 21 engages the board to thereby move the latter and carpet sheet past the second set of cutting discs 22. The separated carpet tiles are then removed from the board which is returned to the starting point via a further ball conveyer 24 and other transfer means (not shown). The uncut sheet is fed on to the needle board by means of a shoot 4, Fig. 2, which is supported by a pivotable member 30. The leading end of the shoot is formed with fingers 36 so that by pivoting the member 30 by a compressed-air actuated means the leading end can be lowered into the needle board; as the needle board is moved by the chain 19, the carpet sheet is drawn from the shoot. The lowering of the shoot is controlled by a switch 40 actuated by movement of the needle board.
