<p>1455691 Evaporators WHITING CORP 2 Now 1973 [17 May 1973] 50964/73 Heading B1B [Also in Division G6] An apparatus for evaporating radioactive waste liqiuid and for use in a vault (e.g. made of concrete) with a removable top, comprises a steam chest and a propeller each of which is suspended from a respective cover detachably mounted over an opening through which the steam chest or propeller can be removed from the apparatus. In Fig. 3 the steam chest 36 of the heat exchanger is suspended from cover 37 and propeller 56 is mounted on shaft 58 extending from motor 57 mounted on cover 60. Covers 37 and 60 are fastened by bolts and pins 39, 40 and 61, 62 respectively. In use liquid is supplied through ports 21 and circulated through the tubes 43 passing through steam chest 36. The heated liquid evaporates in chamber 14 and vapour after passage through the demister 30, is exhausted through port 26. Concentrated liquid is discharged through outlet 50 to a barrelling station (not shown). Steam is supplied to chest 36 through conduit 44 and condensate and non- condensables are removed from chest 36 through conduits 45 and 46 respectively. During use the liquid level in the apparatus varies between a maximum and a minimum and the covers 37, 60 and vapour exhaust 26 are disposed above the maximum level and the steam chest 36 and propeller 56 are disposed below the minimum level. The chamber 14 contains vapour pressure sensor 22. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the steam chest and propeller are mounted in the evaporation chamber and are suspended from covers mounted over openings in the cover of the evaporation chamber.</p> |
