(I) are prepd. by treating 3,3-diphenyl-2-indolinone with propanesultone (R = OH or -OCH2CH2CH2.SO3H) in e.g. methanol. Treatment of the indolinone (I; R=OH) with acetic anhydride gives (I; R = acetoxy).
