The VTOL aircraft has large rotors (B) mounted flush in the large wing surface. The rotors are positioned in vertical ducts through the wing and are driven by variable thrust engines (D) which direct their thrust tangentially down into the rotors on take off/landing. For forward flight the engines are gradually directed horizontally while the rotor blades are progressively feathered, until they form a flush face with the wing. No mechanical linkage is required to drive the rotors. The rotors can be of a large diameter for good vertical control.
|
