The electrooptic display device has display electrodes (2) and a counter-electrode (6). For the purpose of a more rapid change of the electrochromic material from the display state into the erased state, voltage dividers (R1, R2, R3, R4) and switches (11, 12, 13, 14) are used to bring the display electrodes (2) during a short time to a potential E2' (E2' > E2) that is more positive by comparison with the holding potential E2 of the erased state, and only then to bring it to the holding potential E2 of the erased state. For the purpose of a more rapid change from the erased state to the display state, the display electrodes (2) are likewise brought during a short time to a potential E1' (E1' < E1) that is more negative than the holding potential E1 of the display state, and are only then brought to the holding potential E1. Furthermore, a reference electrode (7) can be provided for sensing and stabilizing the potential of the counter-electrode (6). <IMAGE>
