Ductile superconductors contg. a number of thin wires made from a superconductive alloy based on V or Nb, embedded in a copper matrix ('multifilamentary composite') are improved in that the V- or Nb-base alloy contains 2-15 wt % of Al, Si, Ge, Ga or Sn. After the melting the alloy is rapidly cooled from 1500-2000 degrees C to a temp. below 500 degrees C and then subjected to a thermal treatment at 600-1000 degrees C. Superconductors can be used for magnet coils. The critical temp. is increased (>20 degrees K) and the critical magnetic field strength is also increased. The thermal treatment results in the formation of superconductive A3B phases (e.g. Nb3Sn) very finely distributed in the Nb (or V) matrix.
|
