<p>1480426 Vinyl benzyl trialkyl ammonium salt polymers ROHM & HAAS CO 17 Sept 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 40385/74 Heading C3P An aqueous polymer latex is prepared by the emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture consisting of (a) from 0À25 to 5% by weight of the total weight of monomer in the mixture of at least one vinylbenzyltrialkylammonium salt of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is C 8 -C 22 alkyl and X is an anion; and (b) at least one monomer of formula wherein R<SP>2</SP> is hydrogen or alkyl and R<SP>3</SP> is a straight chain, branched chain or cyclic alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or alkylthioalkyl radical, ureido, hydroxy(C 1 -C 5 )alkyl, 2,3-epoxypropyl, amino- (C 1 -C 5 )alkyl, mono or di(C 1 -C 5 )alkylamino- (C 1 -C 5 )alkyl, or hydroxy(C 1 -C 5 )alkylamino- (C 1 -C 5 )alkyl and/or (c) one or more monomers of formula wherein R<SP>4</SP> is hydrogen, methyl or halo, and R<SP>5</SP> is hydrogen, (C 1 -C 5 )alkanoyloxy, formyl, phenyl, tolyl, 2-methoxyethyl, 2,4-diamino-s-triazinyl, (C 1 -C 5 )alkyl or epoxy. The polymer is prepared in latex form by conventional emulsion polymerization techniques of the monomer mixture in the presence of a polymerization initiator with or without an accelerator. In the examples; the sole surfactant is the vinylammonium salt, the initiator system consists of t-butylhydroperoxide, ferrous ammonium sulphate and sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, and the 4-vinylbenzylammonium chlorides are used to prepare the following latices: The latices may be used as sizing agents for paper or fabric, binders for pulp or extenderbinders for fluorocarbon water-repellants.</p> |
