1480624 Spacer fluids for use in wells HALLIBURTON CO 1 Oct 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 42664/74 Heading E1F A water in oil emulsion spacer fluid for spacing a drilling mud and a cement when completing and cementing a well comprises (a) 40-60 parts by volume of a hydrocarbon oil, e.g. diesel oil, 40-60 parts by volume of fresh water having a dissolved chloride salts content of less than 1000 ppm and a total hardness of less than 500 ppm; (b) 15-40 pounds per barrel of an emulsifier composition comprising 55-78 weight percent of lime, i.e. CaO, Ca(OH) 2 , MgO or mixtures thereof, and/or diatomaceous earth as a carrier, and 1-20 weight percent of a C 16-33 fatty acid amide, e.g. oleyl amide, adsorbed on the surface of the carrier; and (c) 0.5-10 pounds per barrel of a surfactant selected from sulphonated paraffins, resin acids, resin soaps, mixtures of a sulphonated lignin with an oleyl amide derived from reaction of oleyl chloride with a C 2-5 aminosulphonic acid, and mixtures of two or more thereof. The emulsifier composition may contain up to 30 weight percent of dimerised oleic acid and 3-15 weight percent of oleic acid. The spacer fluid may contain 1-20 weight percent of asphalt resin, based on the total weight of emulsifier composition, and a weighting material in an amount to impart a weight of 8-20 pounds per gallon thereto.
