<p>1483013 Paint or lacquer coating die HASBRO INDUSTRIES Inc 10 Feb 1975 [17 April 1974] 5479/75 Heading B5A A coating of paint, or laquer, material is applied around an elongate core L by a die head provided with a die D, having an opening 31 through which the core L passes and which is adjustably radially compressible, or expandable, to vary the thickness of the coating, the die head being also provided upstream of the die with a valve member G which is actuable to obturate the flow of coating material being delivered to the die D. When the core issues from an extruder upstream of the die, obturation enables the correct shape and size of the core to be obtained prior to commencing coating. The core passes through the die head to the die D, via a bore 58 in the member G and an aperture 24 in the die body, the member G being threadedly engaged in the die head, at 64, 66, for axial displacement to obturate the flow of coating material, upon abutment of a bevelled downstream face 56 of the member G, with a bevelled face 54 of a cylindrical sleeve 52 which extends upstream of the aperture 24 and is surrounded by an annular chamber 28 to which the coating material is delivered from a lateral die inlet 30. The member G is provided with a seal 62 to the die body, and is rotated by engagement of a tool in recesses 70. The die D comprises an elastomeric material, e.g. rubber, neoprene, or a butadiene polymer, and has a frusto-conical upstream surface matingly abutting a surface 34 extending downstream of the aperture 24, whereby the die D is radially compressible or expansible upon axial displacement of a member E, which is threadedly engaged at 26, 36, in the die body for the displacement, upon rotation by engagement of a tool in recesses 44. The opening 31 of the die D may be round or hexagaonal. The die head may be releasably clamped at a location, Fig. 1 (not shown), to apply a coating to a wire, or to a writing element extruded from an extruder upstream of the die, or either comprising a casing extruded around a writing core which may be preformed or comprise simultaneously extruded pigmented or graphite lead, or a casing having a bore and for use as barrels of mechanical pencils or ball point pens.</p> |
