The pipe coupling has a resilient annular seal (1) seated in a groove (5) in the free end face of the one pipe for cooperation with an end face of the other pipe. The seal cross-section is such that the part of the seal engaging the groove has four edges (13, 14, 15, 16). Two of the edges (13, 14) are engageable with the bottom (20) of the groove. The other two edges (15, 16) cooperate with an undercut in the radially inner side of the groove. The insertion of the seal into the groove is assisted by tapered faces (10, 9) provided at the radially inner and outer peripheries of the seal. |
