1491678 Transfers E T MARLER Ltd 9 Jan 1975 [16 Jan 1974] 01976/74 Heading B6C A dry transfer has a design layer supported by a carrier sheet, and, over the design, there is applied a layer of a composition which, upon drying, will provide a pressure-sensitive adhesive and which, during drying shrinks or contracts. This shrinkage is effective to loose the edges of the design and so improve precise transfer. The carrier sheet may be plastics film, coated paper or film or a film/paper or film/film laminate, and is preferably transparent, with a melt surface. Preferred materials are polystyrene, polystyrene-butadiene, high density polyethylene, polypropylene, acrylonitrile-butadiene - styrene, PVC, polyvinylidenechloride, polycarbonate and polyethylene terephthalate. The design is preferably based on a film-forming polymer, and may include a plasticizer. Preferred polymers are cellulose nitrate, PVC, PVA, acrylic polymers, chlorinated PVC, alkyd resins, epoxy resins and polyurethanes. The adhesive may be polyvinylalkyl ethers, natural or synthetic rubber, acrylic polymer, polyisobutylene, silicone polymer or polyurethane, and may also include terpene resin, ketone resin, ester gum or hydrocarbon resin, and/or microcrystalline wax, hydrogenated castor oil or polyethylene wax. The adhesive may be dissolved in a solvent which is also a solvent for the design. The shrinkage may be achieved by incorporation into the adhesive solution of an insoluble solid powder, e.g. alkyl ammonium montmorrillovite, silica, powdered polytetrafluoroethylene, talc, china clay, barytes, calcium carbonate, blace fixÚ, aluminium hydroxide, silicates, zinc oxide or aluminium stearate. |
