New naphtho-lactam cpds. of formula (in which R is opt. substd. alkyl or cycloalkyl; Y is CN, COOR1 or CONR2R3; R1,R2 and R3 are (cyclo)aliphatic or aromatic gps; R1 and R2 may also be H; NR2R3 may form a heterocyclic ring; rings A and B may contain non-ionic substits.). Pref. Y is COOR1 and R1 is (m)ethyl. Cpds. (I) are intermediates for basic dyes.
