Industrial wastes are utilised by introducing them into furnaces where alkaline earth oxides, silicates or aluminates are produced on large scale, in partic. hydraulic binders (Portland cement, blast furnace cement, trass cement, etc.), lime, burnt dolomite, burnt lime-clay mixt., etc. The introduction is carried out in such a manner that inorganic components of the industrial wastes are incorporated into the main prod. and harmful volatile decomposition prods. are largely absorbed by the main prod. (without adversely affecting its properties), and the heat produced by the burning industrial wastes is utilised at least partly. Wastes that can be dealt with in this manner include those from the prodn. of plastics, rubber, paper, leather, cellulose, linoleum, food and from many inorganic processes. The process can be carried out in rotary kilns or shaft furnaces.
