A device to separate and collect oil slicks, floating in water, is attached to an oil tanker. It consists of vertical aprons along both sides of the hull which are suspended from floating arms, hinged to the ship's sides. These create channels which converge from the intake towards the stern where barriers dam up the collected oil and floating pumps remove it to a tank inside the ship. This device can be attached to any large tanker and saves the necessity of building special ships. It is a simple and practical method and retains its functional reliability even in heavy seas.
|
