Cyclohexylamine derivs. of formula (I) are new: (where R1-R4 are each 1-6C alkyl. X is a single bond, with an opt. branched 2-10C divalent aliphatic gp. (if R1-R4=CH3), CH2 (if >=1 of R1-R4 has >=2C), divalent 6-12C cycloaliphatic group, opt. branched divalent aliphatic group with 6-8C cycloaliphatic substits., or an opt. branched 8-12C divalent dialkylcyclohexane or dialkylbenzene group). (I) and the analogous cpds. in which X can have any of the quoted values regardless of the value of R1-R4, is prepd. by reacting the corresp. bis-cyclohexanol (II) with NH3 at elevated temp. and press. in presence of H2 and a NiCr based hydrogenation catalyst. (I) are intermediates for polycondensates and resins e.g. polyureas, polyamides and polyurethanes. These catalysts provide high yields of (I) without competitive polycondensation reactions.
