A solution of the sodium salt of an o- or pnitrophenol is obtained by hydrolysing the corresponding nitrochloro aromatic compound with caustic soda in solution in dimethyl sulphoxide at 80-115‹ C. while blowing an oxygencontaining gas through the reaction mixture in sufficient quantity to inhibit tar formation. The oxygen-containing gas may be air or air diluted with an inert gas. Examples are given of the conversion of o- and p-nitrochlorobenzene to the sodium salt of the corresponding nitrophenols.</p> |
