Protecting leg of offshore structure against impact by ice - using deflector arranged to oscillate along the leg

An ice deflector for protecting a support column of an offshore structure against impact by an approaching ice sheet is designed to (partially) encircle the column with radical clearance and to be suspended by an elastic support in a partially-submerged position and which incorporates a vibrator for causing it to oscillate vertically so that it repeatedly impacts against the ice sheet to deflect and fracture the sheet adjacent the column.
