The bearing strength of porous ground can be increased by driving elongated linings (4) which are open at both ends vertically into the ground. By this means a predetermined volume of the soil is isolated from the surrounding soil in relation to lateral movement of the ground mass. The lining is circular in cross-section and an anti-friction agent is supplied to the lower leading edge. The lining is driven into the ground while being vibrated. In order further to increase the bearing strength of the ground, the soil volume enclosed in the lining can be compacted by compression or injection or both.
