Refractory block based on carbon includes >=1 integral coolers consisting of hollow metal bodies embedded in the block and arranged so as to allow circulation of a cooling fluid. The metal bodies have fluid delivery and removal ducts and are placed inside the carbon paste during moulding and before firing. Heat is withdrawn from the hot face of the refractory block more rapidly than in prior art, reducing the deterioration of the surface. The blocks are used in furnaces to control the temp.
