Banding machine for packaging of textile materials or for re-packing or for collating small packages into larger collective ones is fitted with a conveyor track for the stepped forward movement of the material to be banded. There are also devices to hold a supply of the strip in readiness for the banding operation at a tensioning point transverse to the direction of material movement on the conveyor. The tensioning device includes an arresting system for that part of the banding strip located to one side of the loop with a blocking device to hold the material taut through the tensioning point. A pair of rollers on the other side of the banding strip loop keeps the bending strip between them, pressing it together during the tensioning process and drawing it away in the tensioned condition from the loop.
