A carbon electrode assembly and connecting nipple for an electric arc furnace has a rebate between the thread of the electrode holder and the holder bottom whereby at least at the start of the thread a reduced thread cross-section is provided such that, in cross-section, the angle between the surfaces of the thread turn is at least 90 degrees. The load imposed on the thread during use and the chance of fracture is reduced.
