Impact energy absorbing steering wheel - has rim segment spokes joined to neighbouring spokes by collapsible clamp

The steering wheel rim consists of four identical segments (6-9) manufactured of either a tube, wire, metal strips or a suitable plastics. Each segment has to legs (10, 11) which together with the legs of the neighbouring segments, form the steering wheel spokes. The spoke ends are fixed to the steering wheel hub (16) which has deformable properties. The hollow space (17) between the four rim segments and the hub can be used to contain an impact absorbing cushion. The rim segment spokes are joined to their neighbouring spokes by clamps (20). The clamps are designed to collapse when subjected to a predetermined strain. The distance between the steering wheel rim and hub is equal to or greater than the rim radius.
