The visual readout device is suitable for aircraft navigation instruments and has a display which includes a first pair of horizontal light beams (12, 14) and a second pair of light beams perpendicular to the first pair, the two sets of beams intersecting at a central point (20). Each beam consists of a number of straight line segments (16a, 16b, etc.) which may be formed from LEDs or gas discharge devices. By suitable selection of the beams to be illuminated, the navigator may be given an indication of how far and in which direction the aircraft has departed from its predetermined flight path. Auxiliary seven-segment digital displays (22, 24) may indicate the distance to a beacon and the beacon identity.
