Multilayer coating prodn. from incompatible paints - using intermediate coating to promote adhesion of base layer, e.g. drying oil to top layer, e.g. polyurethane

A multilayer coating produced from normally incompatible paints is prepd. A first base layer (I) is cleaned with an aliphatic hydrocarbon to remove grease and dirt and then slightly wetted with a mixt. of solvents at least one component (III) of which form part of a coating compsn. (II) which is then applied. (II) cures by physical means and contains (III) and a binder which is compatible with the solvents of the final coating compsn. (IV). Coating (IV) is then applied and comprises a 2-part, chemically curing compsn. which is normally incompatible with base layer (I). The process enables e.g. a polyurethane coating to be applied on air-drying coating such as alkyds, and imparts compatibility to these otherwise incompatible coatings.
