After the amnoxidn. of propylene, the reaction effluent was directly contacted with aq. stream in a quench column. The acrylonitrile and HCN were recovered in the form of aq. soln, and some of the water and impurities were removed by distn. to form a concentrated aq. mixture of acrylonitrile and HCN, which was distilled in an HCN distn. column to remove the HCN in an overhead stream. A side stream in the HCN distn. column was fed to a decanter where an aq. layer and an org. layer were formed.
