(I) New crosslinked hydrophilic polymer gels, contg. diazonium gps. capable of coupling, have formula (I) (where X' is X, Me, Et or (II); and >=1 X is -CH2-CR-CO-; R is H or Me; >=1 X is -CO-C6H4-N2+Y- -CO(COOH)C6H3-N2+Y-, -CH2-CH(OH)- -CH2-O-C6H4-N2+Y- or a -CH2-CH2-CO-NH-C6H4-N2+Y- gp. in which Y- is Cl- or HSO4- and the remaining X gps. are H). (2) The monomeric ester mixts. and intermediate gels contg. nitrophenyl or aminophenyl gps. are new. (I) can be coupled with aromatic amines or phenols contg. a chelate-forming gp., to produce affinity chromatography gels which are highly specific w.r.t. a certain metal ion. ((I) have a wide swelling factor range in water, e.g. 1.5-50, and the content of diazonium gps. capable of coupling is 1.1-3.2 m. equiv./g. (I) are reactive and inert to chemical, biochemical and photochemical effects.
