Preparation of signature for binding - by cutting edges using rotating blades and removing fragments by electrostatic charge

Signatures are carried by a conveyor, with the spine edge downwards, over a centrifugal fan. The fan rotor carries a disc with teeth fixed to its periphery which cut the edges of the pages. At the same time an electro-static charge is maintained on the fan rotor so that the fragments of paper are removed and then drawn away by suction through the fan and discharged through the outlet. This roughening of the spine edges provides a better surface to receive the adhesive applied by a pair of rollers.
