Positive active material for button cell - comprising a vitreous cpd. of metal oxide and silica modified with a second oxide

Positive active material for a battery cell with non-aq. electrolyte, liquid at ordinary temp. and pressure, comprises a vitreous cpd. resulting from the addition of a small amount of SiO2 to at least one electrochemically reducible metal oxide. The metal oxide is pref. PbO opt. modified by addition of Bi2O3 or Cr2O3, or CuO to which Bi2O3 is added in a proportion of at least one molecule Bi2O3 per molecule of CuO. The positive active material is used in a cell having a cathode based on alkali(ne earth) metal and an electrolyte consisting of a solution of a salt of that metal in an organic solvent. The cell made using this positive active material exhibit increased working life when the reducible metal oxides are added. Some of the other properties may also be improved.
