Metering device to produce a disinfectant soln. from mixing a concentrate with tap water includes a buffer tank for water with a water pump, and a concentrate tank with a concentrate pump. The electric motor driving the water pump is coupled through a toothed belt drive and a non-slip infinitely variable gear box to the concentrate pump. This creates a metering appliance with a free outlet for a disinfectant soln. which is independent of the water mains pressure. Both pumps are coupled by a robust mechanical connection. There is no risk of disinfectant entering the water mains.
