The irregular dyestuff patterning for a floor covering fabric is developed at the point where the dye film strips or dye bands are brought together from the separate dye colour supply points. As the patterning of the dyestuff occurs at a single point, equipment size and complexity is reduced. Pref. the various dyestuffs, in different colours, are applied to a moving dye film web or strip, or a number of webs or strips carrying the colours separately. Pref. a common suite plate for each pair of the vats carries the different dyes to the colour mixer. The guide plates can slide across and/or against the flow direction of the dye film webs. Fluid collection troughs are located near the outlet edges of the dye guide plates, running across the direction of dye flow. An adjustable overflow strip can be fitted to the outlet of each dye vat to form a weir with a toothed edge.
