A refuse collection vehicle has a crank-driven compacting plate to transfer refuse from a loading funnel into a main loading space. The compacting plate (2) engages on opposite sides with associated crank arms (26) which are connected to each other by a tension bolt (32) which, at its opposite ends, is connected to the crank arms by means of corresponding articulated connections (30, 34, 36). Lateral forces exerted on the crank arms are therefore absorbed by the tension bolt and a non-uniform stress on the compacting plate is better resisted. In order that the material located in the funnel cannot block the free movement of the mechanism, the connections between the crank arms and the compacting plate are screened off by means (42, 44, 46). <IMAGE>
