The invention relates to a process for operating a heating boiler, which can be heated by solid fuel and by oil or gas, and an apparatus for carrying out this process with an electric line leading to a burner as well as with a main switch. In order to regulate the ignition of the solid fuel with an oil or gas flame, the invention provides that, during a maximum time period of preferably 20 minutes, ignition attempts are carried out, the length of which is restricted to approximately 5 minutes in each case. The ignition attempts are repeated in the specified time if the flue-gas temperature has sunk below a predetermined value (for example 100 DEG C). In order to carry out this process, the invention provides a first timing circuit for restricting the adjustable time period for the sum of all the ignition attempts and a second timing circuit for restricting the maximum time period of each ignition attempt, the latter circuit being controlled by a third circuit which is switched on by a flue-gas thermostat when the flue-gas temperature falls below the predetermined flue-gas temperature.
