The starter starts the engine by means of compressed air. Weak points of electrical starter systems: leads, contacts, short service life of the battery, leakage currents etc. The enclosed drawing shows the functioning of the compressed air starter. Fig. 1: compressed air flows out of the cylinder through the line (1), drives the turbine, which drives the engine flywheel (10) by way of the gears shown. At the same time compressed air through the line (2) forces the piston (4) upwards against the spring (5) so that used compressed air can escape through the aperture (6). Fig. 2: after starting, the spring (5) forces the piston (4) back down. The engine now drives the turbine. Air is drawn in through the apertures (7), compressed and forced through the bore (8) and line (9) into the compressed air cylinder. The starter system could be especially suitable for engines of heavy land-based vehicles and for ship's engines of a certain size. <IMAGE>
