The invention relates especially to an air-cooled internal combustion engine with a hydrostatically driven cooling air fan and with an exhaust system which is ribbed in the area of the internal combustion engine, the cooling air fan being reversible in its direction of rotation as a function of the temperature in such a way that the air flow produced by the cooling air fan following cold starting of the engine is first heated on the exhaust system and moved over the cylinder heads or cylinders to the cooling air fan and is reversed into its normal direction of movement only when the engine is warmed up. <IMAGE>
