The four engine is equipped with accelerometers, each delivering a signal representing the knock experienced by the cylinder head. Analysers produce characteristic pulses when the pressure in the cylinder concerned has a max. value. These are applied to circuits which relate the occurrence of each pulse to the instantaneous angular position of the crankshaft. A validation circuit associated with a clock validates each measurement within a definite range of rotation. Processing circuits establish a statistical value of crankshaft positions for which a predetermined number of signals is obtd. over a number of cycles. A resultant reference signal is used to control the ignition advance. Alternatively, flame front position may be measured instead of cylinder pressure.
