The invention relates to optically bistable components and optically nonlinear components for optical signal processing and information optics which have a solid body that is inserted into an interferometer, so that changes in the optical refractive index of the solid body effect changes in the reflection and transmission behaviour of the interferometer, and in which the refractive index of the solid body depends on the light intensity in the solid body, a change in the optical refractive index in the solid body being caused by an electric field, and light absorption generating free charge carriers in the solid body which via electronic processes attenuate the electric field in the solid body.
