Powdered carbon is introduced through tuyeres into a blast furnace. A delivery chamber, pressurised above furnace pressure is filled periodically with the powdered mixt. It discharges continuously into pipes leading to the tuyeres, into each of which an auxiliary gas is introduced, at 3 to 10 times the rate of flow of the principal transporting gas. The product of total gas flow and mixt. concentration is the same for each tuyere. The auxiliary gas is introduced in the form of a jet in the opposite direction to the flow from the delivery chamber, at between 0.25 and 1.5 times the critical flow rate. The process allows blast furnaces to be fuelled with non-coking powdered carbon mixts. e.g. oil-based, as natural reserves of coking coal become scarce. The arrangement described ensures even distribution between the various tuyeres regardless of obstruction or wear.
|
