In the heat pump system according to the invention, the opening amount of an expansion valve (40) is adjusted to an optimum value depending upon the inlet temperature of water, which is subjected to a heat exchange on a use-side heat exchanger (9), and the inlet temperature of air which is subjected to a heat exchange on a non-use-side heat exchanger (3). On the basis of the detected temperature values, a controller (30) determines the optimum amount of valve opening in order thus to provide a maximum system capacity and a maximum system efficiency. The controller (30) can be equipped with a microprocessor and a read-only memory. In the read-only memory, data values are stored, which store the optimum opening adjustments of the expansion valve corresponding to the different values of the detected inlet temperature of the water on the use-side heat exchanger (9) and the inlet temperature of the air on the non-use-side heat exchanger (3). <IMAGE>
