To protect steam generators against interruptions and subsequent damage, a process for control of the feed water supply or for emergency switch-off of the steam generator is proposed, in which the wall temperature of the combustion chamber is measured at many places one behind the other on the flow side, the measured values are compared with a predetermined temperature profile, and when there is a deviation from the predetermined temperature profile, the supply of feed water is altered or, when predetermined maximum temperatures are exceeded, the steam generator is switched off. Furthermore, wall temperature differences, which are a measure for the heat flux density, are used for the control of the feed water, taking account of the enthalpy of the feed water before or after the economiser.
