The invention relates to a device for determining the working range of a double-acting clamping cylinder for actuating clamping devices on machine tools, in particular interchangeable chucks on lathes, the drives of which, for carrying out the machining of the workpiece, are locked if the clamping cylinder is located outside the respective working stroke, with a control rod which is connected to the clamping piston of the clamping cylinder and the movement of which is monitored for the monitoring of the respective working stroke while allowing for retightening strokes. In order to positively establish the working stroke of the clamping device used in each case, the positions of the control rod monitored by sensors, which positions are produced by an idle stroke (corresponding to the total stroke) of the respective clamping device and limit the respective working stroke, can be stored for the duration of an uninterrupted machining operation. These positions of the control rod, which in each case guarantee a retightening stroke, are automatically deleted if the machine tool is switched off or if the clamping device is changed.
