In the ignition system according to the invention, a signal generator is realised by means of a light-emitting element and a signal receiver is realised by an optoelectronic element, one output of the optoelectronic element being connected to a threshold value circuit which is constructed as a signal shaper and whose output is connected to one input of a known semiconductor ignition system. For the purpose of eliminating the light from the surroundings, the optoelectronic elements are realised by means of a photodiode (D1) and a phototransistor (FT) which emit and receive, respectively, a light in the infrared region. The signal shaper and the driver stage are realised by means of an integrated Schmitt-Trigger and an NAND switching element, it being possible to connect the output (8) of the driver stage to a transistor ignition system (10) or to a thyristor ignition system (10) (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
