Drug abuse compounds containing substances of the classes: amphetamine, barbiturate, narcotic and tranquilliser, and the specific compounds including: morphine, dilaudide, cocaine and codeine, in samples of body fluids are detected qualitatively and quantitatively by the use of a carrier matrix which has specific physical properties relating to the strength and the absorbence of dry chemical products. The matrix being impregnated with dry colouring agents in accurate quantities which have been prepared according to unique processes according to which the value of the pH and the sensitivities to the unique colour changes for testing fluids which have 1000 to 10000 times the sensitivity obtained with thin layer chromatography coloured reagents are obtained without the use of ion exchange resins or of colour reinforcers. <IMAGE>
