A hollow filament separatory module (20) comprises a tube (22) wound from layers (23 to 25) of hollow semi-permeable filaments. Each layer is formed from a helical winding and the filament of each layer has a predetermined length within plus or minus 10%. One end of the annulus is encapsulated in potting compound (66) and the compound is sliced through to expose open ends of the filaments in each layer. The tube (22) is enclosed in a pressure casing (32, 34, 36, 38) having a fluid inlet (44) at one end and two outlets (50, 52) at the other end. The outlet (50) communicates with the open ends of the filaments and fluid which permeates through the filaments flows from it. The outlet (52) communicates with the outsides of the filments and fluid which does not enter the tubes flows from it. The outlets (50 and 52) are separated by sealing rings (58 and 60), which form seals between the periphery of the potting compound (66) and the inside face of the casing part (34).
