In a water-cooled reciprocating piston internal combustion engine, in which the cylinders lying one after another in series are cast relatively close together and cooling water jackets (4a, 4b) extending on both sides next to the cylinders (3) are provided, in order to be able to cool the land areas between the cylinders cast together more efficiently despite the confined spaces, it is proposed, at least in the area of the lands (5) corresponding to the cylinder combustion chamber, to provide cast-in pipes (6) which connect the two lateral cooling water jackets to one another. At the same time the cross section of the pipes may be flattened in the area of the narrowest points of the lands on the sides facing the cylinders (3). <IMAGE>
