In order to prevent damage to engines or machines with forced-feed lubrication, the load delivered by the machine is reduced should the lubrication fail. If this load is constituted by the machine acting as a high pressure pump and delivering a liquid through a gap (homogeniser gap), in the event of failure of the lubrication the gap width is increased in that the hydraulic pressure determining the gap width is reduced as a function of the lubricant pressure, the lubricant being used as hydraulic pressure. <IMAGE>
