The invention relates to a device for operating a switch which initiates a function, whose moving switching element can be operated by pivoting a lever, can be prestressed in a first switching position by means of a spring and can be moved by the lever into an oppositely located second switching position by travelling along a switching path, the lever in this second switching position resting on a fixed stop. For self adjustment of the switch 22 to a predetermined switching point, in a manner which is favourable for installation, the switching element and the lever are connected to one another in a frictionally locking manner, the frictional lock being greater than the force of the spring which prestresses the switching element, and the connection has an idle movement, the idle movement, the minimum pivoting movement of the lever and the switching movement of the switch being linked by the following relationship: idle movement + switching movement < minimum pivoting movement.
